La EOS 5D, de 12,8 megapíxeles, crea una nueva categoría de cámaras digitales SLR, la cual combina un sensor CMOS de formato completo con un cuerpo de aleación de magnesio compacto y ligero.

Con un peso de tan sólo 810 gramos, incorpora un sensor CMOS de segunda generación de 35,8 x 23,9 mm, y la capacidad de realizar series JPEG largas de 60 fotos a una velocidad de 3 fotogramas por segundo, así como con un tiempo de arranque de tan sólo 0,2 segundos.
